TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION ETA VISA TO UK FROM APRIL 2025
From April 2, 2025, the UK will introduce a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system. This will affect citizens from the European Union and several other countries who, up until now, have traveled to the UK without needing a visa. Under the new rules, travelers from visa-exempt countries, including EU nationals, will need to apply for an ETA before visiting the UK for short stays.
What does this mean for travelers?
Until now, EU citizens could travel to the United Kingdom without visas and without the need for any special permission, benefiting from the free movement of people within the European Union. However, after Brexit, the UK lost its EU membership and is gradually introducing new migration rules. This means that from April 2025, EU citizens will have to obtain permission before entering British territory, similar to the process currently required for travelers from other parts of the world.
This permission will be part of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, which the UK government is gradually implementing for foreign nationals from various countries. Travelers will need to apply for the authorization before their trip, which will involve completing an online application, paying a fee, and possibly undergoing a security check.
TRAVEL TO THE UK – WHAT CHANGES IN 2025?
Until now, EU citizens could visit the UK without any prior travel authorization. However, as part of the UK’s post-Brexit immigration policy, from April 2025, they will need to apply for an ETA, similar to the system in place for travelers from many other countries. This authorization will be mandatory for those visiting for tourism, business, short-term study, or transit purposes.
How Does ETA Work?
- Online Application: Travelers will need to submit an application online before traveling. The process will include filling out a form, answering security questions, and paying a small fee.
- Processing Time: Most ETA requests will be processed within 48 to 72 hours.
- Security Check: A security check may be conducted, and in some cases, applications may take longer to process.
WHO NEEDS AN ETA?
ETA will be required for citizens from visa-exempt countries, including:
- EU nationals
- Travelers from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Oman (from February 2024)
- Qatari citizens (from November 2023)
This authorization will apply to tourists, business visitors, short-term students, and people in transit.
EXEMPTIONS:
- British and Irish citizens are exempt from the ETA requirement.
- Long-term visa holders or individuals with settled status in the UK do not need an ETA.
Types of work visas:
- Skilled Worker Visa: For workers with a job offer in the UK who meet skill and minimum salary requirements.
- Temporary Worker Visa: For seasonal workers, volunteers, or those in cultural and religious exchange programs.
- Global Talent Visa: For highly skilled individuals in fields like science, technology, arts, or culture.
Each work visa has specific documentation requirements, such as proof of a job offer, sufficient financial means, or meeting language proficiency standards.
If you plan to work in the United Kingdom long-term, you will need the appropriate work visa. The ETA only covers short-term visits, such as tourism or business trips, but does not allow for long-term employment. To work in the UK, you must meet the specific conditions for various types of work visas, such as the Skilled Worker Visa or the Temporary Worker Visa.
